How to look after your new dentures

Dentures are often the best way to get that perfect smile you’ve been dreaming of. But after you’ve got your new dentures from our lab here in Bristol, they require ongoing proper care to keep them clean and free from stains. In this post, we’ll look at how you can properly care for your dentures so you can keep them looking their best.

Remove and rinse dentures after eating

After each meal, you should run clean water over your dentures to remove any food particles. Be very careful you don’t drop the dentures and break them while you’re cleaning. Many people choose to put water in the sink to avoid them getting damaged if they are dropped.

Handle your dentures carefully

Your dentures will have plastic elements and clasps. Be careful not to bend or damage these elements when you’re removing your dentures or cleaning them. They aid the movement of the dentures and even a small bend can make the dentures feel very uncomfortable and you’ll probably need them repaired by your dental technicians.

Clean your mouth after removing your dentures

Brush your natural teeth with a soft-bristle toothbrush when you remove your dentures to make sure you remove any bacteria.

Also don’t forget to clean your tongue, cheeks, and the roof of your mouth. This will ensure you get rid of any remaining denture adhesive that could cause issues if left.

Your dentures should be brushed daily to keep them stain free. Remember, they will discolour just like normal teeth, so it’s important to keep up your dental hygiene regimen.

Soak dentures overnight

When you go to bed, pop your dentures out and let them soak in water or a mild denture solution. They need to stay moist to keep their shape, so letting them dry out overnight may make them shrink and become uncomfortable to wear.

If you do use a denture solution overnight, give them a thorough rinse in the morning. You don’t want this chemical in your mouth.
